[D] We made camp along Red [C] River
Watched the [G] cattle as they bedded [D] down
Back at the wagons, right after [C] supper
[G] Spread our bedrolls on the [D] ground
And me and [G] Willie, we took the [D] night guard
And the [G] sage never smelled so [D] sweet
The prairie [G] moon, was blazin' [D] silver
No chance to[C]night for a stam[D]pede
Way over yonder, off in the [C] distance
Towards the [G] mountains there in the [D] west
Did I see lightnin', did I hear [C] thunder
The mind is [G] weary, I could use some [D] rest
Then all at [G] once, the wind shifts dir[D]ections
The clouds roll [G] in behind the tumble[D]weeds
Those longhorn [G] cattle, are gettin' [D] restless
God help us [C] all, if they stam[D]pede
Smell the rain, hear the [C] thunder
The midnight [G] sky, turns black as [D] death
The lightnin' crashes, smell the [C] sulphur
It's rank and [G] strong, as Satan's [D] breath
The cattle [G] rise up, and go to [D] runnin'
I spur my [G] pony on and take the [D] lead
And across the [G] herd, I can hear Willie [D] yellin'
[C] Hey Stam[D]pede!
break: D//C//G//D repeat
Dust clouds [D] rise, as the [C] rain falls
They mix to[G]gether, turn the air to [D] mud
I feel the longhorns brush [C] against me
I can feel the [G] demons racing through my [D] blood
Then all at [G] once, my pony [D] stumbles
We hit the [G] ground, I rise up to my [D] knees
In a flash of [G] light, I can see the cattle [D] comin'
Lord I know I'm gonna [C] die in this stam[D]pede
Then I awake, and I look a[C]round me
I'm in my [G]bedroll and I'm layin' on the [D] ground
Over there's the wagon, and there's the [C] campfire
I was only [G] dreamin', what's that [D] sound?
And I feel the [G] earth tremble under[D]neath me
As the midnight [G] sky begins to [D] bleed
And from the [G] blackness I can hear Willie [D] yellin'
[C] Hey Stam[D]pede
D//C//G//D repeat
