Down On Our Own Shield / Jakob Dylan
Album: Country + Women (2010)
--------------------------------------
Intro: F Dm (x2)
It's a struggle, it's a [F]shame
It's all give and n[Dm]o take
Whatever, it i[C]s now, it's right up to ou[Bb5]r waist
It's a pity, it's a [F]shame to see it all slip [Dm]away
I've seen you wor[C]ried babe, but never this [Bb5]way
We hold our [F]ground, we don't [C]kneel
If we [Dm]go [Dm(maj7)] [Bbmaj7]down we go
[Bb5]Down on our own [F]shield
It's a river of [F]tears
And we're in over ou[Dm]r ears
In the dark it [C]rides off with our [Bb5]better years
It's a bottomles[F]s well
It's a littl[Dm]e overkill
It's the end of a[C] dragon's tail
That's whipping[Bb5] round our heels
But we don't[F] bow, we make no[C] deals
If we [Dm]go [Dm(maj7)] [Bbmaj7]down we go
[Bb5]Down on our own [F]shield
[Dm] In this corner ladies and[F] gentlemen
Weighing [C]in, all along my love for [G7]her is strong
[Bb5] We scaled pillars [F]to here tonight[Bb5]
It's not the kind of trick [C]you get to pull twice
It's an ambush [F]girl
A cold-blooded [Dm]low down dirty world
See them [C]yellow lanters walk
A circle ar[Bb5]ound our bit of earth
It's a turn for the [F]worse
It's off with their [Dm]heads if they don't learn
We do this [C]over their dead bodies
Before it's o[Bb5]ver mine or yours
We don't [F]beg for mercy[C] dear
If we [Dm]go [Dm(maj7)] [Bbmaj7]down we go
[Bb5]Down on our own [F]shield
[Dm]Down [Dm(maj7)] we [Bbmaj7]go
[Bb5]Down on our own shield

I am a songwriter (or at least like to call myself one) and this is one of the most
heart breakingly poignant songs I have heard in a long time.
Note - the Dm(maj7)-Bmaj7 run during the chorus is just my attempt to include the bass
line run in an acoustic accompaniment. When researching the names for these chords the
chord that I have labeled as Dm(maj7) was also marked as D m7 (which didn't jive with my
understanding of theory and chord building) and as an F6 (which it is, just inverted).
