[Dmaj7/B]
The gas inside the combustion engine
took away all of the [Bm]mystery and ad[A]venture from the [Dmaj7/B]walk to your house in the dark,
so that we could stay out all [Bm]night long and be [A]king of all the [Dmaj7/B]roads, and the woods, and the lake,
or anything we [Bm]chose, because [A]everything was [D]ours.
And we would spraypaint '[Bm]NRC' so that e[A]veryone would [D]know.
[Dmaj7/B]We would break into the factory. Our [D]childhood autonomy
had [F#m]no respect for authority, or [E]property, or your ahole neighbors' com[Dmaj7/B]plaints.
I still have all the [D]keys to the forklifts that we
[F#m]never got a chance to drive ar[E]ound or tear the building down ourselves.
[Dmaj7/B]From the top of the water tower, [D]
we spilled our guts on one anothe[F#m]r,
and we compiled them together, [E]and we all shared the same [Dmaj7/B]heart.
And we hated all con[D]struction,
but we loved all their mac[F#m]hines,
and they hated our des[E]truction,
and we picked their locks [Bm]apart.
And we [A]thought we were damn cle[D]ver,
because they never kept us out,[Bm]
and we [A]thought we'd live fo[D]rever.
Until the night when [Dmaj7/B]it got way too serious,
and yo[D]u showed me your damaged wrists,
and [F#m]you broke down and we embraced and [E]nothing at that time meant more to me.
[Dmaj7/B]And if I had only known that it[D] would be the last time,
[F#m]we'd be on that level with one anot[E]her I would have never let you go.
[Dmaj7/B] [D] [F#m] [E]
[Dmaj7/B]I still walk those paths at night, but [D]now just on my own.
I re[F#m]cite to myself every story in [E]hopes that I will never let them go.
[Dmaj7/B]I'll hold on to ev[D]ery polaroid from France and R[F#m]ome,
and remember the nights at the [E]Alamo as if it were my second home.
[Dmaj7/B]And I know that we had no[D] idea what we were doing,
but an [F#m]artist's first work can be his greatest [E]under a different set of lenses.
[Dmaj7/B]Our ideas of staying close toge[D]ther for all time;
[F#m]I wish I still had that same state of [E]mind.
