Daniel Johnston - Like a Monkey in a Zoo
i'm having trouble finding the Daniel Johnston version for reference so im going
by Kathy McCarty's cover, which i think is in the same key anyway but im not certain.
the main piano tune goes a bit like this (give it a swing):
[G] [D] [C]
E :-----3---2-0-2-3-|-----------------|
B :-----------------|-------1---------|
G :---0-------------|-----0---0-------|
D :-------0-0-------|---2-------2---2-|
A :-----------------|-3-----------3---|
E :-3---------------|-----------------|
the tune's just in the top strings, you can improvise the other part.
G, D, C
I'm chained to the wall.
(C) G, D, C
I have nothin' at all.
[(C)]And my e[G]yes look into the s[D]unset thinkin' of b[C]etter things to do,
[(C)]Like a mo[G]nkey [D]in a z[C]oo.
G, D, C
The days go so slow.
(C) G, D, C
I don't have no friends.
[(C)]Except a[G]ll these peo[D]ple who want me to do t[C]ricks for them,
[(C)]Like a mo[G]nkey [D]in a [C]zoo.
G, G7
C, G/B, Am
And it could happen to you.
[(Am)]You could be in [G]my place.
G7 C, G/B, Am
No it wasn't always like this,
[(Am)]But I never saw it c[D7]omin'.
G, D, C
I'm so alone,
(C) G, D, C
But this is my home.
[(C)]And the b[G]ars that s[D]urround me keep me from kn[C]owin' any better,
[(C)]Like a mo[G]nkey [D]in a [C]zoo.
G, D, C
Throw me a peanut.
(C) G, D, C
Laugh and make jokes.
[(C)]But I've h[G]ad enough of p[D]eanuts and I'm r[C]eady to choke,
[(C)]Like a mo[G]nkey [D]in a [C]zoo.
G, G7
C, G/B, Am
You come to look at me.
[(Am)]You seem so am[G]used.
G7 C, G/B, Am
But things would look different
[(Am)]If you were in [D7]my shoes.
G, D, C
I know its my fault,
(C) G, D, C
But I want out.
[(C)]And when I c[G]ry out n[D]obody seems to u[C]nderstand,
[(C)]Like a mo[G]nkey [D]in a [C]zoo.
G, D, C
You say I'm cute.
(C) G, D, C
You don't know how much that hurts.
[(C)]You don't kn[G]ow how it fe[D]els to l[C]ive in your own dirt,
[(C)]Like a mo[G]nkey [D]in a [C]zoo.
G, G7
C, G/B, Am
And it could happen to you.
[(Am)]You could be in [G]my place.
G7 C, G/B, Am
Don't let yourself slip.
[(Am)]Don't keep egg on your f[D7]ace.
G, D, C
I used to be happy.
(C) G, D, C
I can't remember those days.
[(C)]But I s[G]old my f[D]reedom for free r[C]oom and board,
[(C)]Like a mo[G]nkey [D]in a [C]zoo.[G]
