I don't actually know if this is the original key, but it's easy to play,
even after the key change. It's not really a guitar song but what I tried
to illustrate in the chords is that I think it should start out simple and
get more complex as it goes on. You can elaborate on that by switching from
slow, even strums to faster and more syncopated strums. I feel like it
should break open at "another winter" and again at "the moon's a fingernail."
I also put in four chords at the end that I think make a nice ending. Comments welcome please.
I watch the W[C]estern sky
The sun is s[C]inking
The geese are f[G]lying South
It sets me t[F]hinking
I did not m[F]iss you much
I did not s[G]uffer
What did not k[F]ill me
Just made me t[C]ougher
I feel the wi[C]nter come[F]
His icy si[C]news
Now in the f[G]ire light
The case cont[F]inues[G]
Another n[F]ight in court
The same old t[G]rial
The same old q[F]uestions asked[G]
The same d[C]enial
The shadows c[C]lose me round[F]
Like jury me[C]mbers
I look for a[G]nswers in
The fire's [F]embers[G]
Why was I m[F]issing then
That whole D[G]ecember
I give my u[F]sual lie:[G]
I don't re[C]member
Another w[Am]inter comes
His icy f[G]ingers creep
Into these b[F]ones of mine
These memories n[C]ever sleep
And all these d[G]ifferences[F]
A cloak I bo[G]rrow
We kept our di[F]stances
Why should it f[F]ollo[G]w I must have lo[C]ved you
[Am]What is the force that b[G]inds the stars
[F]I wore this mask to h[C]ide my [G]scars
[Am]What is the power that p[G]ulls the tide
[F]I never could find a p[C]lace to h[G]ide
[Am]What moves the Earth ar[G]ound the sun
[F]What could I do but r[C]un and [G]run and r[F]un
[F]Afraid to love, afraid to fail
[F]A mast without a s[G]ail
The moon's a fi[D]ngernail and [A]slowly si[D]nking
Another d[A]ay begins and now I'm th[G]inking[A]
That this i[G]ndifference was my in[A]vention
When everyt[G]hing I did sought your a[A7]ttention
You were my c[D]ompass star[A]
You were my m[D]easure
You were a p[A]irate's map
A buried tr[G]easure[A]
If this was a[G]ll correct
The last thing I[A]'d expect
The prosec[G]ution rests
It's time that [A7]I confess: I must have lo[D]ved you
