Capo 2 fret
[D]First time[A] he saw th[Bm]e ground get bu[G]sted he was ten and [D]it was nine[A]te[AsusA]en fifty two
His [D]daddy worked hard from sun up to sun[A] down [Bm]
and the goi[G]ng got tuff hind th[D]em old grey mules.[A][AsusA]
The fa[D]rm grew to be a mo[A]ney maker[Bm]
and the hou[G]se he lived in grew up r[D]oom by room[A][AsusA]
The bo[D]y worked hard but soon got ti[A]red of farming[Bm]
So he sli[G]pped away one night benea[A]th the harvest moon.[D]
his neck was re[G]d as Alabama clay[D]
but the cities call [Bm]pulled him away[A]
he's hot a factory jo[G]b and runs a big machine[D]
he don't miss the far[A]m or the fields of green.[D]
Now the citie[D]s just a prison [A]without fences.[Bm]
His j[G]ob is just a rout[D]ine he can't stand[A]
and at nig[D]ht he dreams of wide open [A]spaces [Bm]
fresh di[G]rt beneath his toes a[D]nd on his hands.[A]
Then one day a[D] picture came insi[A]de a letter[Bm]
of a y[G]oung girl with a baby [D]in her arms.[A]
And the word[D]s she wrote would change his life[A] forever.[Bm]
So he wen[G]t to raise his family o[A]n the farm.[D]
his neck is [G]red as Alabama Clay[D]
X2 now he's going hom[Bm]e this time to stay[A]
where the roots run deep[G] on the family tree[D]
and the tractor r[A]olls through the fields of green.[D]
His neck is red..[G]....as Alabama clay.[D]
