Actor Out of Work (Acoustic) - St. Vincent
Based on http://www.youtube.com/watch?vmutZ9IFq91Y
Try this with a sort of off-kilter bossa nova feel. The verses' chords
should be quite staccato, with the left hand relaxing/muting the strings
between immediately after striking the chord. The verses are freely finger-
picked with some sustain, but notice the position indications for those
minor7th chords. Through it all, syncopated alternating bass notes are
important, as are slides between the bass roots on the chords.
CHORD LEGEND
I'm not certain I've used a standard naming convention for the chords, but
the verses' chord shape just looks like this:
...which is akin to a standard open-position "E7 shape," with a major sixth
added at the top. That's the key to reproducing the acoustic version's
tonality. In fact, it's not necessary to bar the chord, if that's
uncomfortable, as the note found on the 'D' string is not especially
necessary to producing Annie Clark's guitar sound. Its staccato quality
renders audio details like that very difficult to discern anyway.
Verse 1:
n/c C7add6
You're a supplement, you're a salve
[C7add6]You're a bandage, pull it off
I can [Ab7add6]quit you cut it out
You're a [C7add6]patient, iron lung
Chorus (x2):
[C7add6]
Verse 2 (same chords as Verse 1):
You're a cast, I'm broken arm
You're an actor out of work
You're a liar and that's the truth
You're an extra, lost in the scene
Pre-Chorus:
Em7(VII) C7add6
Ooooooooooo
Em7(VII) Dm7(V) Em7(VII)
Oooooooooooooooo
Chorus (x1)
Verse 3 (same chords as Verse 1):
You're a boxer in the ring
With brass knuckles underneath
You're the curses through my teeth
You're the laughter, you're the obscene
Pre-Chorus
Chorus (x2)
Verse 4:
You're a supplement, you're a salve
You're a bandage, pull it off
I think I [F7add6]love you, I think I'm mad
(repeat above finger-picking pattern)
You're a cast, I'm broken arm
You're an actor out of work
I think I love you, I think I'm mad
(repeat above finger-picking pattern)
You're a boxer in the ring
With brass knuckles underneath
I think I love you, I think I'm mad
Outro (x4):
