I think the song is originally played without a capo starting on an A# in stead of a G -
it is, however, easier to play this way:
Ph to Em7 on the Em in the end of each verse.
Capo 3rd
There [G]was a [Am]man came [G]to our [C]town
[C]He wore a [D]suit of [Em]red
[G] He memor[Am]ized with [G]secret [C]eyes
That he [G]hid a[D]way in his [Em]head[D]
He [C]had a s[D]car up[G]on his h[Em]ead
Where there u[C]sed to [G]be a c[D]rown
But he s[G]old his r[Am]obes at the [G]five and t[C]en
And l[G]ived on the [D]edge of [Em]town[D]
That [G]fall he s[Am]howed us a [G]magic l[C]eaf
[C]That he could c[D]hange to [Em]snow
[G] He bought it [Am]partly [G]with his [C]grief
And p[G]artly [D]with his [Em]soul[D]
He s[C]cattered s[D]eeds in the a[G]lley [Em]way
He n[C]ever s[G]eemed to r[D]est
And [G]when you [Am]went to [G]ask him w[C]hy
All he e[G]ver s[D]aid was [Em]yes[D]
He [G]made a s[Am]wan from w[G]aving g[C]rass
[C]Beside a c[D]rystal s[Em]hore
[G] And a sun[Am]rise spun from [G]broken g[C]lass
And [G]many things [D]wondrous [Em]more[D]
But t[C]hen his h[D]ands beg[G]an to [Em]burn
When he h[C]eard the n[G]ews from the [D]war
When we c[G]annot f[Am]ind each o[G]ther he [C]said
Then we c[Am]an't run aw[D]ay any m[Em]ore[D]
Next d[G]ay with t[Am]ears al[G]ong his f[C]ace
H[C]e passed us [D]on the [Em]hill
[G] No one th[Am]ought to [G]ask him to s[C]tay
And he [G]knows that [D]we never [Em]will[D]
There [G]was a [Am]man came [G]to our [C]town
[C]He wore a [D]suit of [Em]red
