[C]The River ran through Howard County, it was the life blood of the [F]land
It made [C]fields of green tobacco, aching [G]backs and callused hands
Mama [C]talked of a coming battle that the [F]womenfolk had to fight
[C]'Cause the good Lord owned the daytime, but the Devil seemed to own the
night
[C]Well it came up out of nowhere, from a dark and bitter [F]seed
It was the [C]roughest kind of roadhouse and a [G]most unwanted weed
It drew the [C]menfolk like a magnet, the women [F]knew what they had to do
So they [G]put it in the hands of Jesus, 'cause they [F]knew that [G]he'd come [C]
through
[C]And the rains came and the river swelled
And the [G]more they prayed the more [C]it fell
[C]When the levies broke everybody saw the [G]awesome power of God
Then the [C]clouds rolled back and the rainbow came to [G]bring a brighter [C]day
'Cause when the [C]flood hit Howard County, all the [G]sins were washed [C]away
[C]Now the mothers tell the story, of the week that the river [F]raged
It's a [C]passing of the wisdom to the [G]ears of a tender age
[C]Better walk the straight and narrow, better [F]keep a watchful eye
[G]'Cause [C]there's a symbol of the wrath of heaven in every dark cloud in
the sky
[C]'Cause the rains came and the river swelled
And the [G]more they prayed the more [C]it fell
[C]When the levies broke everybody saw the [G]awesome power of God
Then the [C]clouds rolled back and the rainbow came to [G]bring a brighter [C]day
'Cause when the [C]flood hit Howard County, all the [G]sins were washed [C]away
