The Gospel According To Luke
Recorded by Skip Ewing
Written by Skip Ewing and Don Sampson
[C]He was an old hand at living and [G7]making his [C]way
He s[Am]melled like old [G7]whiskey and he [F]needed a [G7]shave
His [Am]home was an [G7]alley off [F]8th Avenue
If [C]you had a minute or an [G7]hour or [F]two
He'd [C]tell you the Gospel [G7]according to [C]Luke
Luke carried his Bible in a [G7]crown royal [C]bag
He [Am]wiped off his [G7]brow with an [F]old dirty [G7]rag
He'd [Am]tell you [G7]straight out [F]just the way he believed
Faith [C]in the good Lord was [G7]all that ya [F]need
I remem[C]ber the morning he [G7]first preached to [C]me
He said [Am]give to your [G7]brother if [F]he is in [C]need
[Am]Offer up [G7]thanks for the [F]gifts you re[G7]ceive
There's [Am]treasure in [G7]heaven for the [F]generous few
[C]That was the gospel [G7]according to [C]Luke
So I bought him breakfast at [G7]the Daylight [C]Cafe
Bis[Am]cuits and [G7]gravy hot [F]coffee and [G7]eggs
He was [Am]hungry and [G7]ragged hadn't [F]eaten in days
But [C]I was the one there who [G7]felt out of [F]place
When he [C]folded his hands bowed his [G7]head and said [C]grace
A week ago Wednesday [G7]I saw him [C]again
Down[Am]town at the [G7]mission sur[F]rounded by [G7]friends
Handing [Am]out all the [G7]change he'd [F]collected that week
Saying [C]you boys might need this a [G7]lot more than [F]me
I try [C]hard to practice the [G7]words that I [C]preach
Repeat #3
He was an old hand at living and [G7]making his [C]way
He [Am]smelled like old [G7]whiskey and he [F]needed a [G7]shave
His [Am]home was an [G7]alley off [F]8th Avenue
If [C]you had a minute or [G7]an hour or [F]two
