O[Dm]h you who look down on me with tha[C]t judgement in your eyes
While the [Dm]jury picks its fate for me I'd [C]have you save your size
As a c[F]hild with no [Dm]family I was [F]begging in the [C]street
When great [F]fortune came and [C]made me a [A#]herring girl
I [Dm]don't come from there islands from [C]England I have grown
And [Dm]born in Great Yarmouth that [C]is my native home
In [F]autumn when the [Dm]girls all chased the [F]fish down from the [C]north
How I [F]longed that I would [C]one day be a [A#]herring girl
A [Dm]young girl down from Aberdeen took s[C]ick into her bed
I [Dm]asked if there was work and down to [C]Rona I was led
Oh she [F]smiled at the [Dm]height of me and [F]said that I would [C]do
And as a [F]packer I was [C]joined to be a [A#]herring girl

The [Dm]season started up in Scotland, [C]I'd just turned 16
And [Dm]Rona she's the greatest gutter S[C]tornoway has seen
At [F]80 fish a [Dm]minute, and with M[F]ary not much [C]less
We [F]3 were famed as the [C]best crew of [A#]herring girls
[Dm]Saturday was dancing day and the [C]boys were in the town
We were [Dm]packing up and clean off and h[C]eading for our room
When a s[F]tranger crept be[Dm]hind us in an [F]alley out the [C]back
Out to [F]catch himself a [C]couple of fresh [A#]herring girls
Oh so [Dm]suddenly he was on us and he [C]knocked me to the ground
He [Dm]pinned our Rona by the neck so she [C]couldn't make a sound
But f[F]rom her apron [Dm]pocket fell a [F]knife so clean and [C]sharp
I've taught that [F]man the price of [C]fishing for a [A#]herring girl
Oh [Dm]you who look down on me with that j[C]udgement in your eyes
While the [Dm]jury picks its fate for me I'd [C]have you save your size
For I'd [F]gladly do the s[Dm]ame again to [F]any man that [C]tries
To [F]test his luck and take a[C]dvantage of a [A#]herring girl[Dm]
