THE DUTCHMAN Time: 4/4 Tenor: D Bass: C
The [1]Dutchman not the [16]kind of man, to [1maj7]keep his thumb jammed [16]in the dam
2m7
That holds his dreams in
[5]. But that's the secret only [1]Marg'ret knows[16]
When [1]Amsterdam is [16]golden in the [1maj7]morning when Margaret [16]brings his breakfast
2m7
She believes him
[5]. He thinks that tulips bloom be-[1]neath the snow
He's mad as [4]he can be, but Marg'ret only [3m]sees that sometimes[6m]
Sometimes she [2m]sees her unborn [5]children in his [1]eyes
CHORUS:
Let [2m]us go to the banks of the [3m]ocean
Where the [4]walls rise a-[5]bove the Zuider [3m]Zee[6m]
Long a-[2m]go I [5]used to be a [3m]young man[6m]
And dear [2m]Marg'ret re-[5]members that for [4]me__[5]___
CONTINUED ON PAGE TWO
NOTES:
- The metre is irregular, almost spoken at times
THE DUTCHMAN (page 2)
The [1]Dutchman still wears [16]wooden shoes
His cap and coat are patched with love that Margeret sewed in
Sometimes he thinks he's still in Rotterdam
He watches tugboats down canals
Calls out to them when he thinks he knows the captain
Till Margaret comes to take him home again
Through unforgiving streets that trip him though she holds his arm
Sometimes he thinks he's alone and calls her name
The windmill whirls the winter wind, she winds his muffler tighter
They sit in the kitchen, and tea with whiskey keeps away the dew
He see's her for a moment
Calls her name, she makes his bed up
Humming some old love song
She learned it when the tune was very new
She hums a line or two, they hum together in the night
The Dutchman falls asleep and Margaret blows the candle out
