[(D)]Just an [A]ordinary day, I [D]knew that autumn was on its way,
I could [A]see by the gilt of the [D]clouds, the burnish on the bay,
A [A]ring of effusia [D]settled on the city like a [Bm]vision of the future
Before the [D]scales fell away,
A [Bm]vision of the future looking [D]more than just okay,
[A]A good feeling[D]
Yes, [A]just a good feeling[D]
And it only happens now and then -[A][D]
Out of the [A]mouth of a black dog,[D]
Out of the [A]terrors of 3 a[D]m,
Out of the [A]dark and whispering [D]fen,
I was [Bm]blind then I could [D]see, now I'm blind again.[A]
So I hollered up to Jill,
"Come down from the mountain, your ears are 'a burning,
My speech is a fountain, it's been another long year
But you know I'm not counting,
I dreamed you like you dreamed me,
O the bomb dreamed the fuse and the drowner dreamed the sea",
What a strange feeling...
Yes, it?s a strange feeling
And it only happens now and then -
Out of the mouth of a black dog,
Out of the terrors of 3 am,
Out of the dark and whispering fen,
I was blind then I could see, now I'm blind again.
[A]Most of the Aegean [D]Sea rushes [A]into my bedroom and [D]glitters for me,
The [A]hills of Gallipol[D]i all [Bm]throw up their bones for [D]my industry,
So I [A]build from the charnel [D]the ale house,
I [A]build from the tomb a [D]palace of dreams,
That [A]old barren rockface got [D]silver seams for a [Bm]miner of middling [D]means,
Singing poems of dissolution and schemes -
My penny whistles, [A]lo!
[(A)] [D] [A] [D] [A] [D] [Bm] [D]
Now I summon up Jack, sat up on the hill,
The wrong kind of music, the wrong kind of pill,
Impotent as a potato but still pleading "Give it up Mary,
But not by degrees..."
A [A]portrait of Jack, a [D]study in sin, well I [A]knew of myself before I[D] knew of him,
Now even [A]I couldn't tell ya just [D]who it is asking
[Bm]"Give it up Mary, but [D]not by degrees,
[Bm]Give it up Mary, your [D]virtue, ple[E]ase..."
Into the mouth of a black dog - I go
Into the terrors of 3 am - I go
Into the dark and whispering fen - I go
I was blind then blind again
Into the mouth of a black dog - I go
Into the terrors of 3 am - I go
Into the dark and whispering fen - I go
O what [Bm]beast has my name on its[D] snaggle tooth,
And [Bm]eternal slobber for my[D] finishing you[E]th?
My penny whistles [A]low.
