[E]By the second verse, de[B]ar friends
[C#m]My head will burst, my l[A]ife will end
[B]So, I'd like to start this one off by saying
"[E]Live and love"
[E]I was young and at h[B]ome in bed
And I w[C#m]as hanging on the words som[A]e poem said
And th[B]irty-one
I was i[E]mpressionable
I was [F#m]upsettable
I tried to m[C#m]ake my breathing s[A]top, my heart beat s[B]low
So, when my [C#m]mom and John came in,[A] I would be co[B]ld
(bridge)
Fro[E]m a bridge on Washington [B]Avenue, th[C#m]e year of [A]1972
Broke my[B] bones and skull and it was [E]memorable
It was h[E]alf a second and I was h[B]alfway down
Do you [C#m]think I wanted to turn b[A]ack around and [B]teach a class
Where you [E]kiss the ass that I've ex[F#]posed to you
And at the [C#m]funeral, the [A]Universi[B]ty
Cried at thre[C#m]e poems the[A]y'd present in place of a[B] broken me
(bridge)
I was [E]breaking in a [B]case of suds
A[C#m]t the brass rail, a[A] fall-down drunk with his t[B]ongue torn out and his [E]balls removed
And I kn[E]ew that my last [B]lines were gone while [C#m]stupidly I l[A]ingered on,
other [B]wise men
know when it's [E]time to go
And so I[F#m] should, too
And so I[C#m] fly into the [A]brightest winter [B]sun
Of this [C#m]frozen town, I'm [A]stripped down to move [B]on
My friends, I'm [F#m]gone [A] [B]
Well, [E]I hear my father fall
And [E]I hear my mother call
And [E]I hear the others all whisper, "Come [B]home"
I'm sorry to [E]go
I loved you all[A] so
But [E]this is the worst trip[B] I've ever been o[A]n
So,[E] hoist up the John B. sail
(Hoist up the John B. sail)
Se[E]e how the main sail sets
(See how the main sail sets)
I[E]'ve folded my heart in my head and I wanna go [B]home
With a book in my h[E]and
In the way I had p[A]lanned
Well, [E]this is the worst trip [B]I've ever been [E]on
[E]Hoist up the John B. sail
(Hoist up the John B. sail)
[E]See how the main sail sets
(See how the main sail sets)
[E]I've folded my heart in my head and I wanna go [B]home
With a book in each [E]hand
(With a book in each hand)
In the way I had [A]planned
(In the way I had planned)
I [E]feel so broke up [B]
I wanna go [E]home
