"If the Phone Doesn't Ring, It's Me" by Jimmy Buffett
>From "The Last Mango in Paris" album
Submitted by Richard Burchett
I wrote the intro-melody part out in tab format. This part needs to be
played by finger-picking. The chords above the tab usually give an easy
reference to the proper positioning of the left hand while the individual
notes are played.
Intro-melody:
(C) (Em) (F) (repeat
2x)
[---]
[-]
[---]
[-----]
[----]
[(C)] [(Em)][(F)]
[--]
[-----]
[-----]
[-----]
[-----]
[-----]
Verse 1:
There are ocea[C]ns of feelings[Em] be-tween us,[F][C]
[Am]currents that take us and sweep u[C]s away.
[C]That's why we seldom[Em] have seen us,[F][C]
in the li[Am]ght of a co[G]ld hard day.[C]
[Am]Lot's of new friends, with the same ol[C]d answers,
[Am]open your eyes you might see,[G][G7]
if our l[C]ives were that simple[Em] we'd live in[F] the past,[C]
if the p[Am]hone doesn't ring,[G] its me.[C]
Chorus:
If the p[G]hone doesn't ring, you know that[C] it's me,
I'll be [G]out in the eye of the storm,[C]
if the p[G]hone doesn't ring, you know that[C] I'll be,
where someo[G]ne can make me feel warm.[C]
It's [C]too bad we can't[Em] turn and live i[F]n the past,[C]
Am G C-(first chord of intro)
if the phone doesn't ring, it's me.
Intro-melody: No repeats this time.
Verse 2:
[C] [Em][F]
I've had [C] good days and bad days and going - half - mad days,
I [Am]try to let go, but your stil[C]l on my mind.
I've [C]lost all the ol[Em]d ways, I'm searc[F]hing for new ways[C],
[Am]Putting it [G]all on the li[C]ne.
[Am]Lots of new friends, with the same ol[C]d problems,
[Am]open your eyes you might see,[G][G7]
if our l[C]ives were that simple[Em] we'd live in[F] the past,[C]
if the ph[Am]one doesn't ring,[G] it's me.[C]
Repeat chorus.
Intro-melody: Play the tab part, singing these words over it. All repeats
this time.
[C]It's [Em] me, it's[F] me,
[C]it's [Em] me, it's[F] me,
[C]it's [Em] me, it's[F] me,
[C]it's [Em] me, it's[F] me.
Coda: (Slowly)
If it [C] takes all our fut[Em]ure we'll liv[F]e through the past,[C]
if the p[Am]hone doesn't ring,[G] it's me.[C][C/F][C]
That's All. Once again, this song sounds much better if you finger-pick it.
Also, it's a nice touch to add a high "g" note to the Em chords.
