Capo on 4th fret!
I used to claim in this very spot that the picking was very easy. But after
getting some E-Mails (and listening to the song closely) I must say it is indeed a
bit tricky. So I tabbed it out. Note that this is still a slightly simplified
version. The guitarist plays some more bass notes, but if they were in the tab
that would only confuse, so I left them out. It will sound great if you play it like this.

Intro: C / Am / G / C
[C]If I was a sa[Am]ilor I would sa[G]il you out to [C]sea
[C]Take you across the [F]ocean, ask yo[C]u to marr[G]y me
[Am]Oh if I was sai[F]lor I would sa[G]il you home t[C]o me
And if I was a soldier I would march to war for you
I'd face every bullet and cannonball that flew
Oh if I was a soldier I would wage a war for you
And if I was a jailer I would lock you away
Then I'd have the key to see you each and every day
Oh if I was a jailer I would still have you today
And if I was a rich man I'd buy you flowers every day
But I am a poor man so I'll pick them on the way
Oh if I was a rich man I would pay to make you to stay.
Chorus:
[Am]I've wasted so much t[Em]ime
[F]Writing songs and pl[G]aying on my gui[C]tar
[Am]I've wasted so much l[Em]ove
[F]Now I wish I'd never [G]learnt to play[C] a note.
And if I had an aeroplane then I'd fly you away
Maybe we go to rome or paris for the day
Oh if I had an aeroplane then I'd whisk you away
And if I was a betting man I'd bet you love me too
I'd bet everything I had for the chance to be with you
Oh if I was a betting man my odds are 9-2.
[Am]I've wasted so much t[Em]ime
[F]Writing songs and pl[G]aying on my gui[C]tar
[Am]I've wasted so much l[Em]ove
[F]Now I wish I'd never [G]learnt to play[C] a note.
[Am]Yeah I wish I'd never[G] learnt to play [Am]a note
[F]Oh I wish I'd never l[G]earnt to play a[C] note.
(Solo + Chorus)
And if I was a writer I would write a book on you
I'd tell them all the stories of the things we used to do
Oh if I was a writer I would write a book on you
And if I was a painter I'd paint portraits of you
Hang them in the galleries like all good painter do
Oh if I was a painter I'd paint potraits of you.
(Chorus)
