This song is originally from Billy's first solo album, Cold Spring Harbor, released
November 1971. A fantastic live version of this song is on Songs In The Attic, Billy Joel's
first live album, which was recorded in June - July 1980 during the Glass Houses tour
and was released September 10, 1981. Songs In The Attic features songs from Cold Spring
Harbor in a better form, since Billy's first album was sped up in studio and he "sounded
like a chipmunk." He wasn't happy with the sound of the album, so Songs In The Attic
was a way to make it better and sound more raw and personal.
Intro:
C F x4
[C]Baby all the lights are turned on [Dm]you
[F]Now you're in the center of the st[C]age
[C]Everything revolves on what you [Dm]do
[F]Ah, you are in your prime; you've come of a[C]ge
[Dm]And you can always[F] have your way so[G]mehow
[F]But everybody l[G]oves you n[C]ow
(Intro)
[C]You can walk away from your mis[Dm]takes
[F]You can turn your back on what you[C] do
[C]Just a little smile is all it ta[Dm]kes
[F]Yeah, you can have your cake and eat it [C]too
[Dm]Loneliness will[F] get to you some[G]how
[F]But everybody l[G]oves you n[C]ow
[Bb]Ah, they all w[F]ant your white b[C]ody
[Bb]And they a[F]wait your re[C]ply
[Bb] [F] [C] [C][(B)]
Ah, bu[Am]t between you and me and the Staten Island ferry
[G] [F#dim] So do I[Fm]
[C]All the people want to know your [Dm]name
[F]Soon there will be lines outside your d[C]oor
[C]Feelings do not matter in your ga[Dm]me
[F]Yeah, 'cause nothing's gonna touch you any[C]more
[Dm]So your life is o[F]nly living anyh[G]ow
[F]And everybody lo[G]ves you no[C]w
[C]Close your eyes when you don't want to [Dm]see
[F]Stay at home when you don't want to g[C]o
[C]Only speak to those who will ag[Dm]ree
[F]Yeah, and close your mind when you don't want to [C]know
[Dm]You have lost [F]you innocence some[G]how
[F]But everybody loves you n[C]ow
[Bb]Ah, you know that[F] nothing lasts fore[C]ver
[Bb]And it's all bee[F]n done befo[C]re
[Bb]Ah, but you [F]ain't got the[C] time to go to Cold Spr[Am]ing Harbor
[G]No[F#dim] more[Fm]
[C]See how all the people gather 'r[Dm]ound
[F]Hey, isn't it a thrill to see them [C]crawl?
[C]Keep your eyes ahead and don't look do[Dm]wn
[F]Yeah, and lock yourself inside your sacred w[C]all
[Dm]This is what you[F] wanted; ain't you pr[G]oud?
[F]'Cause everybody lo[G]ves you no[C]w
This is a very fun song to play, just like all of Billy Joel's songs. The man's a hit-maker.
Stay groovy and keep on rockin'.
